How to Change the Igniter in a Roper Whirlpool Dryer

A Roper Whirlpool gas dryer has an igniter as part of its pilot light ignition system. The igniter provides an electrical spark that lights the pilot when the unit is in use. This feature saves gas because it mitigates the need for the pilot light to burn gas all the time, even when the machine is not in use. If your Roper Whirlpool gas dryer is not heating, the problem might be a worn-out igniter.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the dryer's electrical cord from the wall outlet or shut off the circuit breaker associated with the dryer.

    • 2

Remove the screws that secure the access panel on the bottom front of the dryer. Use a Phillips screwdriver or a nut driver to loosen the screws by turning them counterclockwise. The type of tool used depends on the type of fasteners on your particular model. Pull off the panel once all the screws have been removed.

    • 3

Locate the igniter, which is a cylindrical device the size of a roll of quarters and sits next to the pilot light.

    • 4

Remove the two screws that secure the existing igniter to its bracket using a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 5

Pull off the wiring clip from the igniter using a pair of needle-nose pliers.

    • 6

Plug the wiring clip into the new igniter and secure it to the bracket using the screws provided with it. Replace the access panel and restore the power to the dryer.
