Disconnect the power from the refrigerator. Remove any handles and other parts you don't want to paint. Alternatively, you can cover parts with masking tape.
Move the refrigerator outside or in a well-ventilated area. If you must keep it in the house, move it away from your oven and near an open window. Place dropcloths under the fridge to protect the flooring.
Clean the surface of the refrigerator, using a piece of cloth and mild detergent to remove grime and oils from the door. Use fine sandpaper to gently sand the door so the paint adheres. Dip a cloth in cold water to rinse the door, then dry completely.
Don a face mask and spray a coat of appliance enamel paint evenly onto the door. Most appliance paints come in aerosol cans. Briefly shake the can before applying the paint. Apply a second coat and a third coat, if necessary. The website Sophisticated Edge recommends holding the can 12 to 16 inches away from the door.
Allow the paint to dry overnight before replacing parts of the refrigerator you removed or peeling off the masking tape.
