How to Replace the Cam on a Frigidaire Door

Frigidaire refrigerators have two door cams, one on each of the bottom door hinges. The cam is installed around the door pin, and provides the surface on which the door rotates. The cam is made of plastic, and may break after regular opening and closing of the door. When the cam breaks, the door becomes difficult to move, and may stick open or closed. To repair the refrigerator, remove the door and replace the door cam.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Open-ended wrench

Instructions

    • 1

Move the refrigerator away from the wall and then unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Turn the handle on the water supply valve clockwise until it is tight to turn off the water supply.

    • 3

Remove the lower kick-plate from the bottom of the front of the door if replacing the freezer door cam. To remove the kick-plate, open both doors and then grasp the kick-plate from the top. Pull the kick-plate away from the refrigerator cabinet to remove.

    • 4

Disconnect the water supply line from the bottom of the freezer door, if replacing the freezer door cam. The water supply line is located in the compartment below the freezer. To disconnect the supply line, depress the quick-connect using an open-ended wrench, and then pull the line out of the connector.

    • 5

Remove the screws from the door hinge cover on the top of the door and then remove the cover.

    • 6

Disconnect the wire connector, if applicable.

    • 7

Remove the hex-style bolts securing the door hinge to the top of the refrigerator, and then remove the door hinge.

    • 8

Open the door approximately 45 degrees, and then lift it up and off of the bottom door hinge.

    • 9

Remove the mounting screw securing the door cam from the bottom door hinge, then remove the cam.

    • 10

Slide the new cam onto the door hinge, and secure it using the mounting screw.

    • 11

Spread a small amount of silicone-based lubricant on the cam using your finger.

    • 12

Reassemble the refrigerator by reversing the steps taken to disassemble it.

    • 13

Restore the refrigerator's water and power supply, then move the refrigerator back into position.
