How to Fix a Leak in a Refrigerator Door Water Dispenser

The water dispenser in your refrigerator’s door may leak because of a faulty water supply line, an air pressure buildup in the dispenser's water delivery system, or a clogged drain in the refrigerator door. A leak coming from the water supply line will show up as a puddle under the refrigerator. Dribbling water from the dispenser indicates air pressure built up in the water delivery system, and water spilling from the bottom of the dispenser signals a clogged drain.

Things You'll Need

  • Wood blocks
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Utility knife
  • New water supply tubing
  • Quick-connect couplings

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the refrigerator away from the wall at least 3 inches. Tip the refrigerator back toward the wall carefully, then place wood blocks under the front feet to keep the refrigerator tipped back.

    • 2

Watch the underside of the refrigerator for leaks while someone fills a glass with water using the dispenser. If you see water leaking from the bottom of the refrigerator, this indicates that the supply tube is the source of the leak.

    • 3

Pinch the clamp at one end of the water supply tube using a pair of needle-nose pliers. Slide the tube off its connection. Locate the damaged section of the supply tube and cut it out using a utility knife.

    • 4

Trim a new section of water supply tubing that matches the length of the damaged section you removed, using the cut-away damaged section as a guide. Insert the open ends of the new section of tubing, as well as the open ends of the old tubing, into the openings in quick-connect couplings.

    • 5

Snap the quick-connect couplings together, restoring the water supply tube. Pinch the clamp on the end of the water supply tube and insert the tube back onto the connection where it sat before. Tip the refrigerator back and remove the wood blocks, then slowly lower the refrigerator to the floor.

    • 6

Place a large container under the door water dispenser. Press the dispenser's lever for three minutes to release any air that may be trapped in the door dispenser's water system, which might cause water to leak out of the dispenser's nozzle.

Remove the drain grille that sits in the bottom of the door dispenser by grabbing it with your fingertips and lifting up. Flush the grille with water to remove any debris. Wipe out the area under where the grille sits using a paper towel, and use a toothpick to dislodge any debris clogging the drain opening. Replace the grille before using the water dispenser again.
