How to Fix an Old Buzzing Refrigerator

If you have had the same refrigerator for a while, certain problems are likely to arise, such as a frequent buzzing sound emitting from the lower portion of the unit. This is caused by dust buildup on the condenser coils. The condenser coils help draw heat out of the refrigerator and allow it to stay cool. You can fix the buzzing problem by cleaning the coils.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the power cord of your refrigerator.

    • 2

Pop off the front panel at the bottom of the refrigerator to expose the coils. Use a Phillips screwdriver if the panel is held in place by screws.

    • 3

Vacuum the dust and dirt out of the compartment with the hose attachment of your vacuum cleaner. Be sure to get all of the larger clusters of dust and dirt.

    • 4

Clean the remaining dust and debris out of the compartment with a brush. Be sure to clean the metal coils themselves thoroughly.

    • 5

Replace the front panel and plug the refrigerator back in.
