How to Take Apart a Kenmore Refrigerator

Moving a refrigerator is a cumbersome task often exacerbated by a lack of places to grip the appliance. Taking the refrigerator apart makes it easier to move through narrow spaces or down irregularly shaped passageways. Kenmore recommends partially disassembling the appliance while it is in transit to prevent damage to the shelves and crisper drawers. Some steps will vary based on the particular model of Kenmore refrigerator you own.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the refrigerator and move all the food, jars and other items in both the fresh food and freezer compartments to an alternative location. Lift out all of the shelves, crisper drawers and door bins and wrap them in a protective material like bubble wrap for the journey.

    • 2

Disconnect the water connection, if necessary, by moving the refrigerator forward, following the pipe to the home's piping and moving the shut-off valve to the position marked "Closed." The water connection can sometimes be unscrewed by hand; use a pair of pliers if it is too stiff.

    • 3

Pull off the toe panel located beneath the main doors, if you have a side-by-side model, and disconnect the water and electrical connections using an adjustable wrench.

    • 4

Stand on a stepladder to access the upper hinges of the door. While a friend supports the door by its handle, loosen and remove the bolts securing the top hinge to the frame of the refrigerator. Lift the door off the lower hinge to remove it from the appliance. Repeat this step for the remaining doors.

    • 5

Wrap the doors in protective bubble wrap; a large sheet or towel will suffice in a pinch. Gather the pieces of the refrigerator; the appliance is now ready to be shipped. The appliance is easier to grip without doors.
