How to Diagnose a Leaking Refrigerator Condenser

The condenser coils on your refrigerator circulate coolant and draw out heat from the fridge. It's through this system that your refrigerator remains cool. If your refrigerator isn't staying cold, it could be the result of a leak in the condenser. Since the condenser is located on the exterior of the unit, you can troubleshoot the problem yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your refrigerator, and move it away from the wall.

    • 2

Locate the refrigerator condenser coils. On older-model fridges, these will be mounted vertically on the lower portion of the rear of the refrigerator. On new models, the condenser coils will be mounted underneath the refrigerator.

    • 3

Remove the bottom plastic guard on the front of your refrigerator if the condenser coils are located underneath the appliance. This will give you access to the coils. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver if the guard is held in place with screws.

    • 4

Inspect the coils. These coils function best when clean. You can dust or vacuum the coils to ensure they function at peak performance. However, dirt and grime are probably not the reason for the leak.

Check the surface of the coils. Look for any holes in the metal. You can also plug the refrigerator power cable in and search for any fluid leaking directly from the coils. Once you have discovered the source of the leak, you will need to hire a professional to replace the condenser.
