In most cases, a refrigerator operates most effectively when it sits perfectly level on a surface. This leveling may be accomplished by opening the refrigerator door and placing a level across the front of the top shelf and then from the front to back of the shelf. If the level shows that the refrigerator is uneven, open the bottom panel of the refrigerator and adjust the front legs to raise or lower the front and even the unit from side to side.
If the refrigerator has issues with closing, it may be beneficial to slope the refrigerator slightly so that it sits higher in the front than in the back. One possible closing issue occurs when the closing of the refrigerator door causes the freezer door to pop open. By adjusting the legs so that the unit sits higher in the front than in the back, the door automatically recloses if it pops open.
If you believe that your refrigerator is sitting uneven on the floor, take steps to correct the issue as quickly as possible. If you allow the refrigerator to remain uneven, it may cause malfunctions in certain of its components. The main issues generally concern the ice maker and the water supply that feeds it. An uneven refrigerator may cause the water coming into the refrigerator to spill into the bottom of the freezer, which can cause leaks or ice accumulation on the freezer walls.
Some refrigerators can be adjusted using a standard screwdriver. Most units, however, require a hex wrench that fits the screws on the legs. Refrigerators generally come with a hex wrench for adjustment, but if a unit doesn’t, you can find these tools at any hardware or home improvement store. When adjusting the refrigerator legs, turn the wrench clockwise to extend the length of the legs and counterclockwise to shorten the legs.
