Trouble Replacing a Filter in a Whirlpool Refrigerator

Whirlpool refrigerators are among the brands of appliances manufactured with a built in water filter. These filters exist to help make your ice and drinking water taste better and be free of impurities. Like other types of filters they eventually get full of the things they strain out of the water supply. When this happens you’ll need to replace them. If you are having trouble replacing your Whirlpool refrigerator filter it is likely because you are finding it difficult to locate or remove. Depending on the type of refrigerator you have you’ll have to look in different places.
  1. Modern Side-By-Sides

    • Modern side-by-side Whirlpool refrigerators have a water filter located at the bottom front of the unit. The filter is usually located in the grill near the floor, usually to one side. The filter is a cylinder that slides into the space provided and locks by pushing or turning the filter. They are removed in the same way. Simply grip the filter and turn it counterclockwise one-quarter of a turn so that the grip on the cap is in a vertical position. The filter should slide out easily, and you will need to put a new one in and lock it back in position by turning it one-quarter of a turn clockwise. Some models use a push button release where you will press an eject button that will allow the filter to be removed. It may still need to be turned counterclockwise to come out.

    Older Filtered Fridges

    • If your Whirlpool refrigerator is an older model and you do not see a filter slot located on the front of the refrigerator then it is likely located on the back of the unit, attached to the water supply line. Turn off the water supply to the refrigerator before changing this type of filter. It typically needs to be unscrewed from the line and replaced with a new one. The only potential problem is water leakage when you remove the filter. This should be minimal if you have shut off the water completely.

    Bottom freezer Types

    • Some newer Whirlpool refrigerators are designed with the freezer on the bottom of the unit below the fresh food compartment. In these refrigerators the filter is located in the fresh food compartment in the upper right corner above the top shelf. If the cap on the filter says “push” then you push in the tabs and then move them down to release the filter. Pull it forward gently until it loosens if it doesn’t say “push.” You still need to turn the filter counterclockwise to get it to release.

    Other Filter Information

    • Refrigerator filters need to be changed every three to six months, according to the Whirlpool website. Before installing a new filter, remove the packaging and remove any seals that protect it during shipping. After successful installation you should purge the air from the filter. Purge the filter by putting a cup under the water dispenser and pressing the release for five seconds. Release it for five seconds and then Dispense water for two more minutes before using it for drinking water.
