Water Leaks Inside of My Whirlpool Gold Refrigerator

Leaks inside of a Whirlpool Gold refrigerator are commonly caused by an issue with its water dispenser and ice maker. A loose connection or high temperatures in the refrigerator prevent water from reaching the ice maker and freezing to produce ice, which results in leaking rather than ice storage. Alternatively, the leak may be due to a high temperature in the freezer section that causes the ice to melt and leak from the refrigerator. Persistent leaks can cause permanent appliance damage. They require immediate repair to minimize damage.
  1. High Temperatures

    • High indoor temperatures affect the refrigerator's ability to maintain a cool temperature, and results in excessive moisture buildup inside of the appliance. A room temperature between 59 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal for eliminating leaks from the refrigerator, as the fridge's motor runs at a slower speed to lower its interior temperature. Keep the refrigerator and freezer door closed for at least 24 hours to allow the thermostat to lower to the correct temperature.

    Heat Sources

    • An active oven, heating vent or space heater forces the refrigerator to work harder to maintain its refrigeration and freezer thermostat settings, as high temperatures in your refrigerator results in spoiled food and potential bacterial growth. Lower the heat source if possible, or move the refrigerator to a new location.

    Water Supply Line

    • The water supply line connected to your refrigerator dispenses water to the refrigerator, which is used for the ice maker and water dispenser. Water leaks from the refrigerator if the compression nut on the water supply line is loose, as the connection is not secure and will continue to waste water until the connection is tightened. The compression nut can be tightened by hand or with a wrench, but should not be overtightened as this can damage the water line.

    Improper Temperature Settings

    • The settings are adjustable on the front of the refrigerator and determines how cold the refrigerator and freezer sections remain during operation. Accidental changes to the temperature controls affect its interior climate within 24 hours after the changes are made. The refrigerator's freezer settings should be no higher than zero degrees Fahrenheit for a stable temperature and no leakage.

    Faulty Ice Maker

    • The Ice maker produces several batches of ice within a 24-hour timeframe, but if it is defective it cannot properly create ice for the ice dispenser. The ice maker can be replaced by an authorized Whirlpool technician, and requires immediate replacement to prevent refrigerator damage and reduce wasted water.

    Filter Issues

    • A newly installed filter can cause water to leak from the refrigerator, as the filter is filled with water that must be flushed out. The refrigerator's filter system can be flushed by pushing the water dispense lever on the front of the refrigerator for 5 seconds, followed by releasing and waiting 5 seconds before pressing the lever again. The system and is completely flushed when at least 4 gallons of water is dispensed during the flushing process.
