Kenmore Refrigerator Defrost Drip Pan Removal

The defrost drip pan on a Kenmore refrigerator is located underneath the refrigerator. The pan catches any water that drips from the refrigerator during defrosting, so the floor is not flooded with water in the event of a power failure. Over time, the drop pan can become full of dust and dirt, or even damaged during a move. The drip pan is designed to be removable so it can be cleaned or replaced.
  1. Rear Access

    • The easiest method of accessing the drip pan for removal is to pull the refrigerator away from the wall so the pan can be accessed from the back of the appliance. The drip pan can be slid out from the rear of the unit.

    Front Access

    • To access the drip pan from the front of the refrigerator, unclip the grille on the bottom of the appliance. The drip pan is nestled underneath the coolant system, which is comprised of coils of metal and cooling fans. The pan can be pulled out from the front.

    Time

    • The drip pan should be removed and cleaned once a year using warm water and dish detergent. This will prevent a build-up of dirt and dust in the pan caused by air movement around the refrigerator's coolant system. A build-up of dirt will not only cause the pan to hold less water, but can also lead to clogging the coolant fan on the refrigerator, so it is essential that the pan is kept clean.

    Warning

    • Because the drip pan is near the cooling system on a Kenmore refrigerator, it is dangerous to access it while the refrigerator is running. You can easily catch your fingers in a spinning fan when the refrigerator is turned on. Always turn off the power to the refrigerator and unplug the unit from the power supply before attempting to remove the drip pan.
