A Burning Smell From a Magic Chef Washer

Wash from your Magic Chef washer should come out smelling like the washing detergent you use. Older machines may begin to give off smells, especially if they aren't cleaned properly. Burning smells, however, are something to be taken seriously. A foul, burning smell may indicate a serious mechanical problem with your machine. Do not hesitate to attempt a repair yourself or have a certified repair technician examine your Magic Chef washer if you can't fix the problem yourself.
  1. Overloading

    • Magic Chef front load and top load washers have a weight limit, meaning they will only handle certain clothing load weights without performance issues. Wet clothes are heavier than dry. Overloading the washer can cause stress on the motor and the drive belt. Over time, this stress may cause damage to the belt or motor, causing a burning smell to rise out of the machine.

    Belt

    • The drive belt runs from the motor of the washer around the idler pulley and the washer drum. A worn belt that is stretching or cracked may make a burning smell if it begins to slip from around the tub or motor. The burning will have a rubber smell. You can remove the housing of the washer and pull the old belt off. Cabinet removal differs among Magic Chef models, so check your manual for instructions.

    Electrical Problems

    • Electrical problems inside the washer are also a leading cause of burning smells. Exposed wires inside the machine may brush up against metal parts, causing a burning smell to occur. Electrical problems in the motor and the transmission are most common. Electrical problems are hard to diagnose and repair. Determine whether you want to handle the repair yourself or have a service technician handle it.

    Burnt-out Motor

    • A burnt-out motor will also cause burning smells to develop. The motor burns out when the gears or brushings of the motor fail. You may hear a rattling or grinding from the motor area as an indication of motor failure. Most motor repairs are more expensive than buying a new machine.
