My GE Icemaker Dispenser Door Sticks Open

General Electric Profile refrigerators often have an ice and water dispenser on the front of the freezer door. The ice dispenser has a door that opens when it's energized, allowing ice to fall from the dispenser, and then it closes to ensure that the refrigerator has an airtight seal. If the dispenser door is stuck in the open position, the temperature of the refrigerator will rise as air escapes through the door.
  1. Safety Precautions

    • Before beginning the repair, disconnect the refrigerator's power supply. This is done by either moving the refrigerator away from the wall and unplugging the power cord or by turning off the breaker controlling the circuit to which the dishwasher is connected.

    Accessing the Door

    • To access the door, you must first disassemble the ice maker. On some models of GE refrigerators, a plastic trim piece surrounds the dispenser. To remove this piece, simply pull it off the front of the refrigerator. The control panel of the ice maker is secured using pressure. To remove it, grasp it from the bottom and pull it away from the dispenser housing. With the control panel removed, remove the dispenser housing by removing the Phillips screws securing it in place. Disconnect all wire connectors and set the control panel and dispenser housing aside.

    Inspect the Door

    • The door itself may become stuck if an object, such as a wire, obstructs it. Lift the door and examine the surrounding area to ensure that no objects are preventing the door from closing. Inspect the door and its mounting screws, ensuring that the door is not cracked or damaged. If the door is cracked or damaged, replace it.

    Solenoid and Plunger

    • The door is opened using a solenoid, which has a plunger inserted into it. The plunger hooks onto the door, physically opening and closing it. Remove the solenoid and plunger from the dispenser housing. If the plunger is in good condition, replace the solenoid.
