How to Check the Overload Protector on a Whirlpool Refrigerator

The compressor in your refrigerator is the motor that powers the whole unit. The overload protector is a component designed to specifically protect the compressor from surges. If your compressor is wired properly but won't turn on, it could be the result of a faulty overload protector. You can open up your refrigerator and diagnose the problem yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your refrigerator, and pull it away from the wall so you have access to the rear panel.

    • 2

Remove the screws located on panel at the bottom of the refrigerator. Remove the panel. Notice the large compressor. Next to it is a metal terminal box. Inside this box is the overload protector.

    • 3

Unclip the terminal box cover and remove it. You can now see the overload protector connected by two wires.

    • 4

Unplug the wiring from the ports on the protector. Inspect the wiring for damage. Inspect the terminals for corrosion. If there is wire or terminal damage, you will likely need to have a technician replace the wiring and/or overload protector.
