How to Replace the Ice Maker Auger Arm in a GE Freezer

A variety of GE refrigerator models come with an automatic ice maker with an ice dispenser installed in the freezer door. When you push your cup against the flap on the exterior side of the ice dispenser, the auger assembly arm inside of the ice maker moves the ice in the bin around, pushes it out of the bin and into the dispenser. Once in the dispenser, the ice will slide down the flap and into your cup, without your having to open the freezer door. If the auger assembly arm breaks, you will not be able to use the ice dispenser. Installing a new arm will allow you to operate the dispenser again.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your GE icemaker by switching the switch inside the ice bin to the “Off” position.

    • 2

Grasp the auger bin, pull it out toward you, then dump out the ice.

    • 3

Set the bin down on a flat surface and allow the bin to adjust to room temperature. This may take about 30 minutes.

    • 4

Unscrew the shield on the interior of the bin, using a Phillips screwdriver. The shield protects the auger arm’s blades.

    • 5

Turn the bin over and unscrew the two screws that hold the front cover onto the bin, then slide the cover off.

    • 6

Push in the tabs on the outside of the auger assembly and pull the auger assembly away from the bin. The arm is attached to the auger assembly and will also come out of the bin.

    • 7

Slide the face shield off the auger arm.

    • 8

Pry the E-ring off the back of the auger assembly using a flat-head screwdriver.

    • 9

Slide the entire auger arm out from the assembly. Be careful of the cutter blades, as they can be very sharp.

    • 10

Insert the new auger arm into the assembly and slide the E-ring back into place.

    • 11

Reverse the steps to put the auger assembly back together and reinstall the bin.
