Repairing Rust Holes on a Refrigerator Door

Rust holes not only affect the appearance of your refrigerator, but they can also reduce its efficiency. If replacing the fridge is out of the question, a patch job can keep it in good working condition while making it look better. Look to your local auto repair shop for patching materials that will make those rust holes disappear. You can repair a couple of rust holes yourself in little time.

Instructions

    • 1

      Unplug the refrigerator.

    • 2

Sand the holes with a coarse-grit sandpaper to remove all the rust.

    • 3

      Prepare epoxy resin as directed.

    • 4

Cut two to three patches of fiberglass cloth that are just larger than the rust hole using scissors.

    • 5

Coat one piece of fiberglass cloth with adhesive on both sides. Press the patch over the hole, and smooth it with your gloved fingers.

    • 6

Add a second coat of fiberglass cloth coated with adhesive over the first. If desired, add a third layer.

    • 7

Plug in the refrigerator. Allow the adhesive resin to cure for 48 hours or as directed.

    • 8

Unplug the refrigerator again. Sand the patch flat with coarse-grit sandpaper followed by medium-grit and then fine-grit sandpaper. Wipe the patch with a microfiber cloth to remove the dust.

    • 9

Apply touch-up paint over the patch. Use paint with a non-spray sponge-tip applicator for spot painting.
