How to Replace Maytag Refrigerator Door Hinges at the Bottom

When the door on your Maytag refrigerator begins to sag and adjustments do not resolve the issue, it might be time to replace the bottom hinge. Hinges on refrigerators are a bit different than on a standard door. The hinges themselves do not move. They have pins that insert into the door edges on which the doors pivot to open and close. Replacing Maytag refrigerator door hinges at the bottom of the unit does not require removing the doors or any other hinges.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the Maytag refrigerator door, and remove the contents from the door shelves. This makes the door lighter for holding while replacing the bottom door hinges.

    • 2

Remove the toe grille at the bottom of the refrigerator while the door is open. Most Maytag toe grilles simply pull straight off, while some have a screw on each end that you need to remove with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 3

Close the refrigerator door and ask a friend to hold the bottom of the door. If you do not have a helper available, position a wood block under the door to keep it from dropping down when you remove the bottom hinge.

    • 4

Remove the screws securing the bottom hinge to the refrigerator body with a nut driver. The two hex head screws are on the angled portion of the hinge. Pull the hinge straight down to disconnect it from the refrigerator door.

    • 5

Slide the pin on the replacement hinge into the hole on the bottom edge of the refrigerator door, and hold the angled end of the hinge against the refrigerator body. Line up the mounting holes and secure the hinge with the retaining screws.

    • 6

      Replace the toe grille.
