My Kenmore Refrigerater Ice Maker Is Leaking Water

Kenmore refrigerators have models with top freezers, bottom freezers and side freezers. Regardless of which model you have in your home, a leak from the freezer can be alarming. If you suspect that the leak is coming from the ice maker, you can attempt to determine the cause on your own so that you can fix it. Some leaks can be fixed while others require the assistance of a repair professional.
  1. From the Dispenser

    • If the leak is coming from the dispenser in the door, it may be due to your not holding your cup under it long enough. It may also be due to the water filter needing to be changed or the water system needing to be flushed. Flushing is done by dispensing water for five seconds, waiting five seconds and then repeating until 3 gallons of water have come out.

    Too Warm

    • If the temperature in the freezer is too warm, it can result in a leak from the melting ice. Adjust the temperature using the control panel in the refrigerator. It can take up to 24 hours for the temperature to cool down to the new setting. Leaving the door closed will expedite this process. Also confirm that you do not have any food blocking the vents that the freezer shares with the refrigerator. These vents circulate the cool air and if blocked can result in warmer temperatures.

    Self-Defrost Cycle

    • The freezer can run a self-defrost cycle on its own. When this happens, you may experience some water leaking from the freezer side. It is normal to see water when an automatic self-defrost cycle has been completed.

    Not Level

    • The refrigerator has a drip pan to collect any water, and if the unit is not sitting level it can result in a leak. Some amount of water from the unit is completely normal and no cause for alarm. With the assistance of a friend, you can level the unit by removing the front grille so that you can access the leveling feet and adjust them with a wrench.

    Water Supply Line Leak

    • Your water supply line may be to blame for the leak. It connects to the back of the refrigerator to deliver water for the ice maker and water dispenser. Inspect the hose on the back of the unit for any cracks or holes. If you discover any, the hose will need to be replaced. You can consult with an appliance repair technician to confirm your diagnosis before replacing it.

    Internal Component

    • Other internal items may be faulty and causing the leak. Such items include the water valve and the ice maker control module. If you cannot troubleshoot the leak on your own, it may be caused by one of these internal components. A qualified refrigerator repair technician can assist you in diagnosing the cause of the leak.
