How to Fix a Frozen Tank When the LG Refrigerator Water Dispenser Is Not Working

An LG water dispenser draws its water from a plastic tank inside the fresh food compartment of the refrigerator. This is advantageous because it allows the appliance to chill the water before it reaches a glass. Thawing the tank and preventing it from freezing will ensure uninterrupted access to ice cold water without risking damage to the refrigerator. In most cases the freezing has a solution that requires no professional help.

Check the thermostat setting of the refrigerator's fresh food compartment, which must not be below 32 degrees Fahrenheit or 0 degrees Celsius. If your model does not have a digital temperature control, consider purchasing one to help properly set the appliance. The ideal fresh food storage temperature is 37 degrees Fahrenheit or 3 degrees Celsius. Any changes made to a refrigerator take several hours to take effect. It may take up to one week for the water tank to thaw.

Empty the fresh food and freezer compartments and store the food in an alternate location, if possible. Unplug the refrigerator, open the doors and wait approximately 24 hours for the ice to thaw in the water dispenser tank. This approach is much faster than raising the temperature, but it may disrupt your kitchen for a short time. Place towels around the appliance to catch melting water.

Avoid running the refrigerator when it is nearly empty of contents. Cold air settles at the bottom of the appliance. If that air is not absorbed by food, the lower portion of the appliance will be colder than expected. The water tank, which is behind the crisper drawers, tends to freeze quickly when the bottom of the fresh food compartment is colder than normal.
