How to Replace a Hinge Bearing on a Refrigerator

If you look at the area where your refrigerator door connects to the refrigerator body, you'll notice a hinge secured with bolts. This hinge holds the door to the body of the refrigerator. However, the door itself uses a small bearing to open and close. This bearing is located on the inside of the door. If you want to replace a bad bearing, you will have to remove the door.

Instructions

    • 1

      Unplug your refrigerator.

    • 2

Open the doors of your refrigerator, and remove all door bins and any food in the bins. Turn off your refrigerator and freezer via the controls in the unit.

    • 3

Remove the screws holding the hinge cap in place with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the cover to expose the hinge and bolts. If there is no cap covering the door hinge on your particular model fridge, you may skip this step.

    • 4

Remove the hinge bolts with your wrench. Remove the metal hinge from the door.

    • 5

Open the door, lift it up and place it on a sturdy work surface. Locate the hinge bearing on the corner of the door, inside the door stop bracket.

    • 6

Insert the tip of your flat-head screwdriver in the slots in the bearing. Pry up to pop the bearing out of the compartment.

    • 7

Fit a new bearing in the compartment and snap it in place.

    • 8

Replace the door, hinge, bolts and hinge cover.
