How to Replace an Overloaded Capacitor in a Whirlpool Refrigerator

If your Whirlpool refrigerator’s motor is rumbling or making a loud noise, a broken overload capacitor may be the problem. The capacitor helps control the amount of energy running within your refrigerator. If the part breaks, other parts within the refrigerator are affected. Replace the capacitor and order a new part from Whirlpool or buy it online.

Instructions

    • 1

Move your Whirlpool refrigerator away from your wall and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Locate overload capacitor cover near the refrigerator’s back bottom. It has multicolored wires coming out of it.

    • 3

Remove the screw with a Phillips screwdriver from the retaining clip holding the cover. Lift the cover to remove it from the refrigerator’s back.

    • 4

Disconnect the two wires connected to the overload capacitor using needle-nose pliers. The capacitor is located on the assembly’s left side. It’s a small, round, black piece.

    • 5

Inserting a flat-head screwdriver into the spring clip and pressing down removes the clip. Pull the overload capacitor out of the refrigerator.

    • 6

Place the new capacitor into the same position and reconnect the spring clip by pressing it into place.

    • 7

Reconnect the two wires to the capacitor, and then place the cover back over the capacitor. Reinsert the screw into the retaining clip of the cover and plug the power cord back into the wall.
