My Amana Bottom-Mount Fridge Is Not Cooling

As an essential kitchen appliance, your refrigerator probably plays a more integral role in your meal preparation than even your range or microwave. Because you rely on it to keep your food items properly and safely stored, an issue with its temperature or cooling capabilities can mean food spoilage and lost money. If you own an Amana bottom-mount refrigerator, you may encounter several issues that prevent the appliance from cooling properly. Fortunately, most of the problems can be resolved without calling a repair or service technician.
  1. Check Plug

    • Your Amana bottom-mount refrigerator requires electricity to operate properly. If you notice that it is not cool, check its power cord to ensure that it is plugged in securely to a grounded 3-prong outlet. You can verify that the outlet is functional by plugging in a small appliance or lamp to see if it turns on. If the outlet does not have power, examine your circuit breaker or fuse box to see if the breaker needs to be reset or a fuse needs to be replaced. Consult an electrician if you cannot locate a problem with the circuit breaker or fuse box and your refrigerator still does not have power.

    Check Controls

    • For your Amana bottom-mount refrigerator to cool sufficiently, its controls must be set properly. The controls vary based on the model that you own, so consult your use and care instructions to determine the proper setting. Some models use a number system, with 1 being the warmest temperature and 5 being the coldest. Others follow a similar pattern, but feature different numbers of snowflakes for each setting instead of numerals. Amana recommends that you leave the refrigerator controls at the mid-level setting. If you have recently installed the refrigerator, it may take up to 24 hours for the compartment to reach the proper temperature once you change the setting.

    Check Door

    • Cold air can escape from your Amana bottom-mount refrigerator and warm air can enter the compartment if its door is not fully closed. Check your refrigerator to see if there is an obstruction preventing it from closing all the way, such as a large jug of milk or Tupperware container. The crisper compartment’s cover should be fully pushed in so its back is flush against the supports. Check the other bins and shelves to make sure that they are not in the way of the door either. To keep the fridge temperature consistent, minimize how often you open the door and avoid leaving it open for prolonged periods.

    Adjust for Large Loads

    • When you add a large load of food to your Amana bottom-mount refrigerator, the airflow inside may temporarily be restricted. As a result, its cooling capabilities may be limited, so the interior temperature rises and it feels warmer inside the refrigerator. Wait a few hours for the temperature to return to a normal level. If the refrigerator still does not feel cool enough, turn the controls one setting higher. Keep an eye on the temperature, however, because it may become too cold if you take items out and the airflow is no longer restricted. In some cases, foods may partially freeze.
