How to Fix a Small Refrigerator's Freeze Plate

A small vented plate is located on the back or side wall of a freezer, and vents into the control damper. The damper, when open, allows cold air to pass from the freezer into the refrigerator. The vented plate may crack or become dirty, which would require you to either clean or replace it. Either option only takes a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Slide the ice-maker’s ice bin out from the refrigerator to provide access to the plate.

    • 2

Unscrew all of the screws that hold the plate into place by using a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 3

Pull the plate out from the freezer and inspect it. Look for cracks or buildup.

    • 4

Wash the plate with warm soapy water to remove any buildup on the plate. If the plate is in good condition, you don't need to replace it. If the plate shows signs of damage, purchase a replacement from the manufacturer or from an appliance repair store.

    • 5

Replace the plate and screw it back into place.

    • 6

Slide the ice-maker bin back into place.
