How to Change Out the Condenser on a Kenmore Freezer

The condenser fan plays a vital role in the functioning of your freezer. It works in tandem with the compressor, blowing cold air through the appliance. A warm freezer or one that is working too hard may signal a broken condenser fan. You can attempt this replacement yourself, but you should always consult the manufacturer's guide to check on the correct replacement parts and processes. By replacing the fan yourself, you can save money on service costs and keep your freezer functioning at its best.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the condenser fan on your freezer. Whether your freezer is an upright or chest style, the condenser fan will be located somewhere near the compressor coils. This is probably on the bottom or back of the freezer. Review the manual that Kenmore supplied with your freezer if you have trouble locating the fan.

    • 2

Unplug the freezer. This is an essential safety step to avoid electric shock while you are attempting this repair.

    • 3

Unscrew the mounting bracket or the screws holding the fan motor in place. Remove these mounting items and pull the fan motor away from the freezer.

    • 4

Identify the wires that are connected to the motor. Note the color of wire and the terminal it is connected to on the fan motor. There are likely two or three wires and terminals.

    • 5

Use pliers to pull out each plug or connector that connects a wire to a terminal.

    • 6

Remove the fan blade from the old motor. If the fan blade is broken, throw it out and purchase a new fan blade through your manufacturer or an appliance parts supplier. Install the fan blade onto the new motor and connect the wires according to your notes. Tighten screws or secure onto the appliance with appropriate securing mechanism.
