How to Replace the Compressor in a Kenmore 59658692890

Turn off the power to the Kenmore refrigerator at the main circuit breaker. Remove any foodstuffs from inside the refrigerator and freezer cabinets and store them elsewhere during the procedure.

Have an assistant help you move the Kenmore out from any obstructions so you can work behind the appliance. Unplug the Kenmore from the socket.

Look for the colored wires leading to the electrical plug on the compressor. The electrical plug comprises the relay and capacitor assembly. Grasp the relay body and pull straight backwards. Don't wiggle the plug as you pull it off the compressor, otherwise you may damage the connections.

Use a hacksaw to cut the high and low pressure copper lines leading into the compressor.

Loosen the bolts holding the compressor inside the refrigerator body with a socket wrench.

Loosen the screw holding the black grounding wire that leads from the compressor to the refrigerator chassis. You may need to pull the compressor part of the way out of the chassis before you can see the wire.

Remove the rubber grommets from the old compressor. Check for wear and tear and replace them, if needed.

Connect the new compressor to the grounding wire.

Set the new compressor inside the chassis so the holes at the base of the compressor and the grommets line up with the bolt holes in the refrigerator chassis. Insert the bolts and tighten.

Slip the electrical assembly onto the plug at the side of the compressor.

Sand down any rough edges on the low side line. Apply flux to both ends of the cut line. Slip a union joint over one end of the cut line and press the free side of the line into the union joint. Apply solder to the union joint by heating it with a plumber's torch. Repeat the process for the high side line.
