How to Fix an Amana AFI2538AES Freezer Handle

The Amana refrigerator model AFI2538AES has an 18.0 cubic foot fresh-food compartment behind stainless steel French doors. The lower 7.0 cubic foot freezer compartment slides in and out of the refrigerator with the help of a curved metal handle attached horizontally to the exterior of the drawer. Over time, the metal freezer handle can become loose, causing the handle to wiggle on its mounts or disconnect completely from the front of the drawer. Tightening the handle screws often fixes the handle, but you may need a replacement handle if you are unable to tighten the handle to your satisfaction.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply masking tape to the face of the drawer where the handle attaches. Cover at least 3 or 4 inches of space around the handle to avoid scratching the surface with the handle or tools.

    • 2

Look along the bottom of the metal freezer handle where it attaches to the freezer door. Find the small setscrew openings on the handle near the door.

    • 3

Insert a 3/32-inch hex key into the small opening. Push the handle against the drawer face as you turn the internal setscrews clockwise to tighten them.

    • 4

Loosen the freezer handle setscrews by turning them counterclockwise with the 3/32 hex key, if you need to replace the handle. Pull the handle off the handle mounts and away from the door face.

    • 5

Install the replacement Amana freezer handle over the mounts. Make sure the internal setscrew openings face toward the floor.

    • 6

Insert the hex key into the setscrews' openings. Push the handle against the drawer face as you turn the internal setscrews clockwise to secure the handle to the freezer drawer.
