Repairing a Cracked Plastic Wall in a Refrigerator

A key component of a refrigerator's design is the plastic that covers the interior and creates seamless linings that keep the cool air in and heat out. However, stresses due to overloaded shelves can sometimes cause plastic linings to crack. Cracks compromise the energy efficiency of the appliance, but you can restore full functionality to the refrigerator lining by filling and patching any cracks.

Things You'll Need

  • Cloths
  • Drill
  • 1/8-inch drill bit
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • 2-part epoxy plastic filler
  • Plastic spatula or knife
  • Plastic spreader (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all items from inside the refrigerator. Unplug the refrigerator. Allow the refrigerator to come to ambient temperature and then wipe away any condensation from the plastic lining.

    • 2

Equip a drill with a 1/8-inch drill bit. Drill holes at each end of the crack to halt its growth. Take care to drill through only the plastic lining and not the exterior walls of the refrigerator.

    • 3

Clean the area with a cloth dampened with rubbing alcohol.

    • 4

Extrude equal amounts of epoxy resin and epoxy hardener. Mix the two parts together thoroughly with a small, flat plastic spatula or knife.

    • 5

Spread the epoxy over the crack, using the plastic spatula or knife or another plastic spreader to push it into the crack and smooth it level with the rest of the surface.

    • 6

Allow the epoxy to cure for the time indicated in the manufacturer’s instructions before turning back on the refrigerator.
