If the Kenmore refrigerator has inadequate power, the refrigerator may not work as expected. Kenmore recommends that the unit be plugged into a grounded, 3-prong, 115-volt, 60-Hz, AC-only electric outlet for sufficient power. Do not plug the refrigerator into an extension cord or adapter cord, and do not plug other appliances into the outlet where the refrigerator is connected. Any of these factors may reduce power and affect the performance of the unit.
If the Kenmore refrigerator is not working at all and you have verified that the appliance is correctly connected to a recommended power supply, the fuse or circuit breaker may need to be replaced or reset. If there is a power failure in the whole home, power will have to be restored before the refrigerator will run properly again. Call your electric company for more information.
The refrigerator and freezer are controlled by rotary knobs in the refrigerator compartment. If either or both of the knobs are turned to “0” or “Off,” then the refrigerator may not cool completely or at all. Turn the knobs to the desired temperature setting, and let the appliance cool for at least 24 hours for the temperature to change.
Though packing the refrigerator and freezer with as much food as possible might sound like a good idea, blocking the air vents inside the refrigerator and freezer will reduce air flow and affect performance. Pull items away from the rear and sides inside the unit so that air may circulate freely.
The condenser coils, which are located on the back of the refrigerator, help cool the refrigerator and can lose effectiveness when dirty or dusty. Remove the power, and use a soft brush or a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to clean off the condenser coils, which look like a bunch of black coils, as well as the condenser fan, which is located above the coils. Then reconnect the power to the refrigerator, and allow several hours for the refrigerator to begin to cool properly.
Sometimes warm air can be enough to cause the refrigerator to work poorly. If the refrigerator seems to be running constantly during hot or humid weather, this is normal. If the doors are being opened frequently and the motor is running regularly, try to reduce the amount the doors are opened. Make sure the doors close completely, and clean the door gasket with a damp cloth if the gasket is dirty and the seal is not working completely. Don’t let food items block the door from closing -- push all items back an inch or two from the front of the refrigerator.
