Troubleshooting a KitchenAid Refrigerator Ice Maker with a Red Flashing Light

If your KitchenAid refrigerator has a built-in ice maker, it is a good idea to get familiar with its normal operations and to learn what to do when something goes wrong. The ice maker in your KitchenAid refrigerator requires regular maintenance to run its best. If you notice a red flashing light when you try to run the ice maker, that is an indication that the unit needs to be cleaned before it will continue making ice.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the selector switch on the ice maker to the "Off" position. Wait five to 10 minutes for the ice to collect in the storage bin. Remove the ice from the storage bin.

    • 2

Remove the drain cap from the bottom of the water pan, which is located inside the storage bin. Allow the water to drain into the storage bin. Do not proceed until water has stopped flowing from the drain.

    • 3

Screw the drain cap securely on the water pan. Read the directions on the ice maker cleaning solution. You will need a 16-ounce bottle of an approved ice maker cleaning solution to complete the cleaning cycle.

    • 4

Pour the bottle of ice maker cleaning solution into the water pan. Fill the bottle with water and pour it into the pan, then fill the bottle again and pour that water into the pan as well.

    • 5

Move the control switch to the "Clean" position. Wait for the completion of the cleaning cycle, which should take approximately 45 minutes.

    • 6

Remove the drain cap from the water pan and check to see if any cleaning solution is still in the water pan. If any cleaning solution remains, run the cleaning cycle again. Place the drain cap back on before you start the cleaning process. After the cleaning process has completed, turn the control back to the "On" position to resume ice production.
