How to Fix a Light in a Refrigerator

The refrigerator light is not necessary for the refrigerator to perform its basic functions, such as keeping food cool, making ice or providing a space for food to be stored. However, the refrigerator light is helpful when you open the refrigerator door because it allows you to more easily see what is inside the appliance. This is particularly helpful when the rest of the kitchen is dark. Many refrigerators require a 40-watt bulb. Fixing a refrigerator light does not require any special expertise and takes only a moment to complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the refrigerator away from the wall and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Pull away the light shield that covers the light bulb when necessary. Some refrigerators feature a light shield, while others simply have an exposed light bulb.

    • 3

Turn the light bulb in the refrigerator clockwise to remove it. Set it aside after it is removed.

    • 4

Insert a new light bulb and turn it counterclockwise to tighten it.

    • 5

Replace the shield if necessary. These shields often click into place.

    • 6

Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and place the refrigerator back into its place.
