My KSRG25FKSS05 Ice Maker Freezes Up

Whirlpool’s KSRG25FKSS05 refrigerator comes with an ice maker installed in the freezer door. While you’d think that a frozen ice maker would be a good thing, it actually can make it difficult for you to use it properly. In most cases, it’s a quick fix that will have your KSRG25FKSS05 back to normal in no time. If it is a problem with your ice maker assembly, you may need a service call.
  1. Ice Making Process

    • Your KSRG25FKSS05’s ice maker receives water from the water line to produce the ice cubes. As it makes cubes, the cubes fall into the ice bin, located on the inside of the freezer door. When you press a glass or other container into the ice dispenser lever, the metal spiral, or auger, in the ice bin turns and pushes the ice from the bin down the chute.

    Freezing Up

    • While the KSRG25FKSS05 ice maker relies on the cold from the freezer to function, it’s possible the ice maker assembly can malfunction due to freezing. Sometimes the ice can freeze together and jam in the chute. The auger can also develop frozen ice around it, preventing it from turning. Both of these issues can occur from time to time without any serious damage to the KSRG25FKSS05.

    What to Do

    • If your KSRG25FKSS05’s ice maker freezes up, you just need to clean it out. Empty the cubes out of the storage bin and clean it with dish detergent and warm water. Be sure to rinse it out carefully before you replace it in the unit to avoid bad-tasting ice cubes later. It takes about a day for the ice maker to produce and dispense ice after being emptied but your unit should function fine afterward.

    Service Calls

    • If your KSRG25FKSS05’s ice maker doesn’t continue functioning after you’ve cleaned it out and made a new batch of cubes, you need a service call. A certified repairman can take apart your ice maker assembly to diagnose why it’s freezing up. If you attempt to do it yourself, you will void any manufacturer or retailer warranties you have on the unit.
