My Self-Defrosting Freezer Is Leaking

Self-defrosting freezers work by periodically running a heating element on a timer. This thaws any ice build-up inside the freezer and on the cooling coils, and eliminates the need to manually defrost a freezer. While a self-defrosting freezer is convenient, the system is not without its issues.
  1. Understanding the Self-Defrosting System

    • Every time you open your freezer door, humid indoor air flows in to the unit. When the door is then closed, this air is cooled by the freezer, and the humidity becomes condensation on the inside of the unit. Over time, this condensation forms a layer of ice on the shelves and walls of your freezer, and reduces the unit's efficiency. Self-defrosting mechanisms ensure this frost is thawed before it compromises the appliance's efficiency. The thawed frost is drained into a pan on the bottom of the unit, where it evaporates.

    Defrost Drain Clog

    • A drain in the back corner of the freezer compartment drains defrosted condensate away from the freezer. This drain can become clogged by debris and bits of food from the freezer. Examine the drain and remove any obvious obstructions. If the drain has a screen, clean it thoroughly.

    Frozen Drain Line

    • The defrost drain takes water from the freezer compartment down to a condensate pan located in the bottom of the freezer. If this plastic drain line freezes, water cannot pass and you have a leak. Pouring a small amount of hot water down the defrost drain will thaw out any accumulated ice and help get the drain flowing again.

    Condensate Drain Pan

    • The condensate drain pan can usually be accessed by removing the front grill of the freezer. This pan is where all thawed frost and condensation ultimately winds up. The heat from the freezer's fan motors and compressors helps aid in evaporation. However, debris and dust can cause issues with the pan and lead to overflows. Remove the pan and wipe it clean using soap and water. Replace the pan and see if your leak issue has been resolved.
