Why Does My Amana Free-O-Frost Refrigerator Freeze Food?

Refrigerator Controls

• An incorrect temperature setting is the most common reason for food to freeze inside the Amana refrigerator. The temperature controls are located in the refrigerator compartment and operated by sliding the lever to the right or left. Slide the temperature control to “4” to set the refrigerator to the factory-recommended setting and let the refrigerator adjust for 24 hours before the new temperature takes effect. Check the “Deli Fresh Chiller” control above the deli drawer and slide the control toward the right, as very cold chiller temperatures might affect overall temperatures within the refrigerator.

Temperature Testing

• After 24 hours, if the refrigerator temperature still seems too cold, place a food thermometer into a glass of water and set the water glass in the center of the refrigerator. Shut the refrigerator door and wait between five and eight hours. Check the thermometer, which should read between 38 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit. If this is the temperature reading, no further action is needed.

Compressor and Condenser Fan

• Sometimes cooling is affected by the compressor and condenser fan, which are designed to pull heat away from the refrigerator. If covered in dirt or debris, cooling might be affected and the refrigerator might overcompensate with very cold temperatures. Disconnect power to the Amana refrigerator and use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment or a soft brush to clean off the compressor in the back of the refrigerator, which looks like a flat black device, and the condenser fan, which is a fan above the compressor.

Service

• If adjusting the temperature controls and cleaning the compressor and condenser fan do not increase the temperature in the refrigerator or the temperature test shows very cold temperatures, you might need a service call.
