The Magic Chef Refrigerator Is Making Noise

Cracking Sounds

• You may hear cracking sounds coming from the compressor as it turns on. According to the Magic Chef manual, a natural expansion of the metal around the compressor occurs over time, as the unit heats and cools. This will occur most often when the fridge is new. The popping sound will level off as the unit ages.

Gurgling Sounds

• During the cooling process, the condenser removes heat from the inside of the fridge. During this process a great amount of water is made. A drain on the fridge collects this water, preventing leaks. When water drains, there may be loud gurgling sounds coming from the fridge. This is normal.

Vibrations

• Vibrations are not a normal part of operation. First, the fridge needs to be placed on a level surface. If the surface is not level, the legs of the fridge can be adjusted. Smaller Magic Chef fridges have legs that unscrew by hand. Turning counterclockwise raises the leg, and turning clockwise lowers the leg. Bigger fridges require a screwdriver to turn the leg. Also ensure that the fridge is on a strong surface that will not vibrate during regular operation.

Faulty Fan

• At the back of the freezer is a fan that circulates air throughout the freezer unit. Although long lasting, the fan may begin to rattle or make a loud engine noise when it is faulty. The fan sits behind the back panel of the freezer. You can take out the panel by removing the screws. The fan is held in place with a few screws and unplugs at a connector. A new fan will often stop what might be considered loud engine noises.
