My Ice Maker Makes a Loud Noise & No Ice Is Dispensed. What Is Wrong?

If your ice maker is malfunctioning, it can certainly put a crimp your summer day refreshment. While there are several reasons why your ice maker could be making noise or not dispensing ice, many of them are normal in the operation, such as the ice falling into the bin or the unit not having enough time to produce cubs. When it is a problem, causes vary depending in the manufacturer and model of your ice maker, but generally, it is either an ice jam or an auger problem.
  1. Normal Ice Maker Noises

    • The first thing to remember about an ice maker is that it makes noises as a normal part of ice production. Between the ice production, the ice falling to the ice bin and the ice moving through the dispenser, you may hear various noises throughout the entire process. Sometimes the noises may even appear loud, depending on the ambivalent noise level in the room, when nothing is wrong with the unit.

    Ice Production Times

    • There is a normal explanation for no ice being distributed from your ice maker. The ice maker has to be on to dispense ice, and most ice makers take about a day to produce and dispense ice. It is possible that your ice maker is not dispensing ice because it has not had enough time to produce it after a new installation or being emptied.

    Jams

    • If the noises coming out of your ice maker are not the normal ones and there is not a reasonable explanation why no ice is coming out, it might be a jam in the dispenser chute. Jams occur from time to time just from the ice catching in the chute. Use a plastic utensil to clear the chute and dislodge any possibly stuck cubes.

    Auger Problems

    • The auger is a metal spiral in the ice bin that turns and pushes ice into the chute. If it is not functioning, your ice will not come out. It can also cause loud noises when it is attempting to turn but cannot complete the function. An auger can have ice form around it, rust or the motor can stop functioning. Depending on the details of the malfunctioning auger, the fix could be anything from cleaning out the ice bin and starting a new batch to replacing the entire auger assembly.
