How to Keep Your Garage Freezer Working in the Winter

High-capacity freezers are often too large to keep in the house with other kitchen appliances so many people install them in the garage or basement. Although freezers operate with extremely cold internal temperatures, strict limitations are imposed on the climate around the appliance. To safely keep your freezer in a garage during the winter, you must ensure certain conditions are met.

Instructions

Ensure the temperature of the garage does not drop below 0 degrees Fahrenheit; the freezer relies on the air outside the appliance being warmer than the air inside. Purchase a heater for your garage if you live in a part of the world that experiences severe winters. Temperatures above 110 degrees Fahrenheit are also dangerous for your freezer.

Make sure proper clearances around the freezer are observed. Allow for at least 3 inches of room on all sides so air can circulate through and around the appliance. Squeezing the appliance into tight spaces between cabinets during the winter may cause the appliance to ice up.

Avoid leaving the garage open in the winter. The temperature inside the garage will drop rapidly when exposed to the outside air due to the size of the door opening. Keep the door closed if you are shovelling the drive.
