How to Replace the Overload Kit on a Whirlpool Refrigerator

The overload protector monitors the refrigerator compressor and prevents it from overheating. If the protector is faulty, the compressor can quickly fail as a result. The overload protector is easily accessed and replaced on a Whirlpool refrigerator. Other brand names that use identical overload protectors include Roper, KitchenAid, Kenmore, Amana, Magic Chef and Jenn Air.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Whirlpool refrigerator and move it away from the wall. Remove the screws holding the back panel at the bottom of the refrigerator covering the compressor if your model has a panel. Do not touch the capacitor on the compressor, as it may still hold an electrical charge that can harm you.

    • 2

Locate the overload protector by noting the small box with the electrical wires running in and out of it. Remove the box cover by freeing the clip with the screwdriver or just pulling it off if it is held on by tension.

    • 3

Look for the part identical to the replacement overload protector in your hand. It is connected to two wires and normally held in place with a spring clip.

    • 4

Pull the connectors off the overload protector using needle nose pliers. Do not tug on the wire itself. Slide the retaining clip to the side and pull the unit out from the box.

    • 5

Place the new unit into the box, and secure it with the retaining clip. Slide the connectors back into place using your fingers or the pliers. Place the cover back on the box, and put the outer covering back on the Whirlpool. Plug in the refrigerator and move it back into place.
