The KitchenAid Ice Maker Is Not Working & the Light Is Blinking

The ice maker sensor blinks red whenever it is blocked by having its cover pop open. The sensor cover opens automatically every time the freezer door is open or when the ice storage bin is removed or out of position, and it signals the ice maker to temporarily cease ice production. This blinking is normal operation and doesn't indicate a problem with the ice maker. If the ice maker is not making ice, there is a problem with either the water supply, filter or ejector arm, and those problems aren't indicated by a blinking sensor light.

Allow 72 hours for ice production to begin after the refrigerator is installed. It takes this long for the unit to cool enough to produce ice. After that time has passed, a batch of ice will be produced every three hours.

    • 2

Replace the ice storage bin in the KitchenAid freezer, or ensure that it is in proper position. To check the position, switch the setting on the ice dispenser on the front of the freezer door to "Cubed" ice, open the freezer door and hold the base of the ice storage bin with one hand and use the other to press the "Release" button on the right side of the base. Lift it out of position, and reposition it on the base and push it down to secure it in place.

    • 3

Examine the grate, also known as the ejector arm, where the ice passes before it falls into the ice storage bin. Make sure no ice is clogging the arm. Use a plastic utensil to chip away any ice.

    • 4

Move the KitchenAid fridge forward enough to access the cold water valve. Ensure the fridge is properly connected to the valve, and ensure the valve is turned on. Look to see whether there is any kink or damage to the water line.

Dispense water from the outlet on the freezer door. Note whether there is a normal amount of water flow. If not, the water filter could be clogged, and that could reduce the amount of water flowing to the ice maker. To change the filter, lift open the filter door. Pull or allow the filter to eject automatically. Remove the packaging and O-ring covers on the new filter before installing it. Turn the new filter clockwise to snap it into place.
