How to Check a Thermostat Switch

The refrigerator thermostat maintains the temperature and regulates the defrost cycle. The thermostat's two-way switch prevents the defrost heater from overheating. When the switch is closed, the unit continues to run. At regular intervals electricity causes the metal switch to curl, breaking the circuit. If the switch does not curl back and forth, the thermostat will not work. Testing the thermostat will tell you if there is a problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the refrigerator from the wall.

    • 2

Remove all items from the freezer.

    • 3

Remove the screws from the bottom panel of the freezer and pull the panel up. The defrost thermostat is located underneath.

    • 4

Pull on the connectors attached to the thermostat. Use needlenose pliers if the connectors will not come loose.

    • 5

Set a multitester, a device used to test voltage in a circuit, to the X1 setting.

    • 6

Place one probe on each of the terminals. You should receive a reading of zero when the thermostat is below 40 degrees Fahrenheit and a reading of infinity when the thermostat is between 40 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Replace the thermostat switch if the unit is faulty.
