Removing an Ice Maker From a GE Side-by-Side

Repairing or replacing your ice maker in a GE side-by-side refrigerator requires removing the ice maker from the freezer. Should your home not have a water line to supply your ice maker, you might consider removing the ice maker to provide more room in your freezer for ice trays. You may leave your refrigerator plugged into the wall receptacle when removing the ice maker, so you don’t have to worry about spoiling food.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the GE side-by-side refrigerator from the wall. Turn off the water supply valve to stop the flow of water into the refrigerator. Depending on the original installation, the valve may turn clockwise or counterclockwise. Disregard this step if you do not have a water supply line attached to your refrigerator.

    • 2

Open the freezer door and remove anything stored on the top shelf above the ice maker. Lift the top shelf from the freezer and remove it.

    • 3

Lift the ice storage bucket, and pull it from the freezer. Removing the bucket exposes the ice maker auger motor and the ice maker power switch. Turn the switch to the “Off” position.

    • 4

Find the three or four nuts holding the ice maker auger motor to the rear wall of the GE side-by-side refrigerator. Use a nut-driver to remove the nuts from the motor.

    • 5

Lift and pull the auger motor from the freezer to expose the auger motor wiring harness connection. You must pull the connector from the rear wall to release and remove the ice maker auger motor from the freezer. Once you remove the auger motor, you expose the ice maker’s wiring harness beneath the ice maker.

Disconnect the ice maker’s wiring harness from the rear wall of the freezer. Locate the hanging brackets attached to the top of the ice maker. Loosen the two nuts holding the brackets to the rear wall of the freezer. Lift the ice maker up and out of the freezer.
