How to Replace a Door Hinge on a GE Profile Refrigerator

General Electric refrigerators have two door hinges on each door, one located on the top of the door and one on the bottom of the door, which not only secure the door to the refrigerator, but also make for smooth movement of the door. If a hinge breaks, it must be replaced immediately because this could lead to the door falling off of the refrigerator and causing injury to the user.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all of the contents from the door, if applicable.

    • 2

Move the refrigerator away from the wall, if it is installed. Unplug the appliance from the wall outlet, and turn off the water supply valve.

    • 3

Remove the screws at the top of the base grille, located on the front of the refrigerator, below the doors. Remove the grille from the refrigerator.

    • 4

Disconnect the water supply line and wire harness from the bottom of the freezer door, if replacing the freezer door hinge. To disconnect the water supply line, pull the collar on the water supply line back, and then pull the water line out of the collar. To disconnect the wire connector, squeeze the lock tab on the connector and then separate the connector from the refrigerator's wire harness.

    • 5

Remove the hinge cover off of the top of the door hinge by prying it off with a putty knife, or squeezing the sides and lifting the cover, depending on the model of your refrigerator.

    • 6

Remove the two hex-style screws from the top of the door hinge.

    • 7

Open the door to a 90-degree angle.

    • 8

Lift the door up and off of the bottom door hinge. If removing the freezer door, have a partner guide the water supply line and power cord through the bottom hinge. Set the door in a safe location.

    • 9

Remove the screws or bolts, depending on the model of your refrigerator, that secure the door hinge to the cabinet or to the top of the door, depending on which hinge you are replacing. Remove the old hinge.

    • 10

Align the new door hinge, and then install the screws or bolts to hold it in place.

    • 11

Lift the refrigerator door, and then have a partner guide the water supply line and power cord through the bottom hinge of the door.

    • 12

Reinstall the screws or bolts on the top of the door hinge, and then replace the hinge cover.

    • 13

Reconnect the water supply line and wire connector, and then replace the grille on the bottom-front portion of the refrigerator.

    • 14

Plug the refrigerator back into the power outlet, and turn on the water supply valve, if applicable.
