Adjusting the Defrost Timer on a Frigidaire FRS20ZSH

Frigidaire offers a series of self-defrosting refrigerators that begin with the product identification FRS20ZSH. As of 2011, there are six models that fit this category. The designs and features of each model may vary slightly, but the internal setup is the same. The defrost timer sits in the lower left-hand section behind a panel. It regulates how often the heating cycle runs to prevent frost buildup both inside the freezer and on the working elements of the system, such as the coils.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the refrigerator from the wall outlet and empty out the inside by removing the food and racks.

    • 2

Remove the back panel. The method will depend on the design of your Frigidaire. Look for screws that hold the panel in place. If you own a side-by-side unit, the timer is on the left. The refrigerator may have one panel that covers both sides or separate panels for each section. There may also be an access panel on the bottom left corner.

    • 3

Look to the left of the fan once you get the panel off. You will see a box-like component. This is the defrost timer. It will have a dial or screw on the flat side that allows you to make adjustments.

    • 4

Turn the dial or screw one notch counterclockwise to decrease the time between defrost cycles. In other words, if the refrigerator is set to run the defrost every 4 hours, turn the adjustment to set the cycle to start every 3 hours. You will want the defrost to run more frequently if there is ice buildup on the inside of your freezer.

    • 5

Move the dial or screw clockwise to add time between cycles. For example, if you want the defrost to run every 5 hours, you turn the adjustment to the right one notch. Do this if the freezer is not cool enough or not maintaining a proper temperature.
