How to Tighten the Refrigerator Door on a Kenmore Elite

If your Kenmore Elite refrigerator doors become loose, they may not shut properly. This can result in the refrigerator running longer than usual, or the food spoiling, because of escaping cold air. Loose hinges and an unlevel refrigerator can cause the doors to separate from the refrigerator and not shut correctly. Check these two items on your refrigerator for a prompt and uncomplicated repair.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your Kenmore Elite refrigerator and unplug it from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Remove the beauty covers from the top hinges. They may be held on the hinges with a Phillips-head screw, or they may simply pop off the hinges. Use a 5/16-inch nut driver to remove the hex head screws on the top hinges and pull the hinges out of the top of the refrigerator doors.

    • 3

Lift the doors off the bottom hinges. Set the doors aside.

    • 4

Grab the grill along the bottom of the refrigerator with both hands. Pull up from the bottom of the grill to pull it off the bottom of the refrigerator and expose the bottom hinges.

    • 5

Tighten the bottom hinges on the refrigerator using the 5/16-inch nut driver. Place the doors back onto the bottom hinges.

    • 6

Insert the top hinges into the Kenmore Elite refrigerator doors. Replace the hex-head screws into the hinges and tighten them securely. Replace the beauty covers onto the top hinges.

    • 7

Place a box beam level on the top of your Kenmore refrigerator. If the refrigerator is unlevel, adjust the leveling feet at the bottom of the refrigerator. Depending on your Kenmore Elite version, you may use the nut driver to turn the leveling screw beneath the hinge, raising the refrigerator up or down. Other Elite models use a Phillips-head screwdriver to raise or lower the legs on the front of the refrigerator.
