How to Troubleshoot a KitchenAid AquaSense Ice Maker

The Kitchenaid AquaSense ice maker is an ice dispensing system installed in many Kitchenaid side-by-side refrigerator models. The AquaSense indoor ice bucket leaves room for more freezer capacity, and the automatic dispensing feature ensures you have a constant supply of ice. With proper care and maintenance, your ice maker should encounter few problems. If your AquaSense ice maker is malfunctioning, troubleshooting can resolve most problems.

Instructions

  1. No Ice or Not Enough Ice

    • 1

Inspect the water supply valve and make sure that the connection is tight and the supply is turned on, with the valve fully open.

    • 2

Check the water supply lines for kinks or bends. Straighten the line out to prevent restricting the flow of water to your ice maker.

    • 3

Turn the shut-off arm or switch on your ice maker to the “On” position. If this is a new ice maker, wait 24 hours for ice production to begin. It may take up to 72 hours for your AquaSense ice maker to have full ice production.

    • 4

Wait 24 hours for your ice maker to produce more ice if you’ve recently removed a large quantity of ice.

    • 5

Inspect the ice maker ejector arm for clogs. Sometimes ice can become stuck inside the ejector arm and prevent the ice maker from producing ice. Remove stuck ice from the ejector arm, using a plastic utensil.

Foul Taste, Color or Odor in Ice

    • 6

Throw away the ice that is currently in the bin. Ice that is stored too long can absorb odors, and this can also alter the color and taste.

    • 7

Remove the ice bin and wash with dish detergent or baking soda and water. Rinse thoroughly and dry before replacing the bin in your ice maker.

    • 8

Place refrigerated and frozen food into sealed, airtight containers. Remove items that are spoiled or not covered. These can affect the color, smell and taste of your ice.

    • 9

Install a water filter to the refrigerator’s water supply to remove minerals such as sulfur from the water. If there is a filter already installed, it may require replacement. Discoloration in your ice is an indication that the filter is not working properly.

    Dispenser Stalling

    • 10

Switch modes from crushed ice to cubed if the ice maker is malfunctioning when producing crushed ice. If the cubed ice dispenses properly, press the crushed ice button to begin dispensing again.

    • 11

Ensure the freezer door is closed completely and that the ice bin is seated firmly in position. Wait 24 hours for new or previously disconnected units to produce ice. Full ice production can take up to 72 hours.

    • 12

Remove any ice clogging the dispenser or the bin with a plastic utensil and clean the chute and the bin with a warm, damp cloth. Dry completely.

    • 13

Empty the ice bin and inspect the auger, which is the spiral-shaped metal piece inside the bin. If any ice has frozen around the auger, use warm water to melt it, and dry it thoroughly with a towel.

    • 14

Wait three minutes if the ice dispenser arm has been held in for a longer than normal period. This allows the motor to reset. The AquaSense ice maker stops dispensing ice if the arm is held in for too long.
