What Makes the Refrigerator Water Filter Indicator Light Turn On?

Many refrigerators have an electronic control panel with key pads and lights that control the automatic ice and water dispenser. Other models have a water filter inside the refrigerator compartment. The water filter indicator light next to the water filter or on the control panel turns on for a few reasons.
  1. Water Filter

    • The most likely reason a water filter indicator light illuminates is that the water filter needs to be changed. Most refrigerator manufacturers recommend changing the water filter about every six months, but the light may come on sooner if the ice and water dispenser is used frequently. New water filters are available from the refrigerator manufacturer and in many home appliance and retail stores.

    Filter Replacement

    • Replacing the old water filter requires removing it by either pushing on its end or pressing the “Eject” button next to the filter. Then the filter can be slid out, or it may need a one-quarter counterclockwise turn first. Place the filter cap on the new filter, if applicable, and slide the new filter securely into the filter housing, using a one-quarter clockwise turn if necessary. Most installations emit a click when the filter connects properly.

    Reset Button

    • Some refrigerators require resetting the water filter indicator light when a new filter is installed, and the light stays on until reset properly. Touch and hold the “Filter” or “Filter Reset” button for about three seconds or until the light goes out or turns from red to green.

    Disconnection

    • Occasionally the water filter indicator light stays on even when the filter is replaced and the button reset. If that occurs, check the placement of the new filter to ensure it is completely connected in the filter housing, and reset the filter key pad again. If the light remains on, disconnect the refrigerator's power cord from its electrical outlet for 30 seconds, and then reconnect the cord to the outlet. If the light still stays on, contact the refrigerator's manufacturer for advice.
