How to Reattach a Signal Arm to a Kenmore Ice Maker

During normal operation, the ice maker signal arm, which is also called a control arm, is in the down position. Kenmore freezers are equipped with this style of ice maker. As ice is produced and fills the bin, the arm is moved upwards, which stops ice production. If the arm gets frozen to the already made ice or gets bumped, the arm can come loose. As a result, the ice maker gets stuck in the off position and will not make ice. It could also get stuck in the on position and overflow with ice. You can reattach the arm, however, without the use of any special tools or skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Open up the freezer door. Locate the ice maker in the top section of the freezer. Depending on your specific model, the ice maker may be on the left or right.

    • 2

Slide the signal arm out if it is still partially connected. Reposition it so that the open end of the signal arm frame is facing upwards. Note the two pointed edges on each side of the top of the signal arm.

    • 3

Feel around the back side of the front piece of the ice maker for the plastic cover on the edge in the front piece. Locate the small hole in this plastic piece.

    • 4

Slip the tip of one of the top ends of the signal arm into the hole. When properly installed, the plastic housing on the lower section of the front of the ice maker should be around part of the signal arm.

    • 5

Find the other small hole on the plastic flange mechanism just above the water fill cup on the back of the ice maker nearest the back wall of the freezer.

    • 6

Push the bent tip of the other top end of the signal arm through the flange hole until it clicks into place.

    • 7

Lift the control signal arm up and release it to ensure it stays in place. Push it to the down position to resume ice making.
