How to Remove Refrigerator Door Insulation

When a fridge door is closed, a seal is created between the inside edge of the door and the inside edge of the refrigerator compartment frame. This seal is achieved by door insulation, a rubber gasket that runs around the inside edge of the door. If the gasket is torn or rotted after years of use, cool air can leak out between the door and fridge compartment. This will cause the inside of the fridge to warm up so the appliance must run more often to maintain a stable cool temperature. You'll need to remove the insulation gasket before replacing it.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the refrigerator door and locate the door seal gasket that runs around the inside edge of the door.

    • 2

Lift up a section of the gasket with your fingers. If it does not move, use the tip of a flat head screwdriver to pry up a section of the gasket. Once lifted, hold the section of gasket up with your fingers.

    • 3

Loosen the screws that are visible underneath the gasket. Do not unscrew them all the way, just loosen them halfway.

    • 4

Move along the gasket, lifting it up with your fingers as you go and loosening the screws under it. As you move around the door, the insulation gasket should eventually come off.

Repeat these steps on the freezer door if necessary.
