Frigidaire Top Freezer Overfreezes & Causes Ice Buildup

Frigidaire manufactures a number of types of refrigerator/freezer appliances, including side-by-side appliances, refrigerators with freezers on the top and refrigerators with freezers on the bottom. Each compartment has its own cooling and temperature settings. If you have an appliance that has a top freezer that is freezing so much that it is causing a buildup of ice, there are a few things you can do to find and fix the problem.
  1. Defrost the Feezer

    • Turn the freezer dial to the "Defrost" setting; if there is no defrost option on your model, you can simply turn the freezer dial to "Off" and leave the freezer door open while the ice melts away. Remove any food from the freezer before you do this. It may take several hours to fully defrost an iced-up freezer. When you turn the freezer back on, avoid setting the dial to a temperature that is too cold.

    Check Temperature

    • Remember that there are separate temperature dials in the refrigerator and in the freezer. This means that even though the refrigerator temperature may be set properly, the freezer setting might be wrong. Frigidaire recommends that you set the temperature in the freezer to about 0 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal ice production.

    Change Temperature

    • If you have checked the temperature settings in the freezer and found the setting to be too cold, adjust the setting to a warmer temperature. Newer Frigidaire refrigerators feature a touchpad that allows you to increase or decrease the temperature by pressing the "Up" or "Down" arrows. Older models of refrigerators have dials on the inside of the freezer that you can turn to increase the freezer temperature.

    Patience

    • It can take several hours for a freezer to change its temperature to a warmer setting. Frigidaire recommends you wait a period of about 24 hours for the temperature inside the freezer to stabilize at the temperature at which you set it.
