Noises in a KitchenAid Superba Refrigerator

The Superba is a series of discontinued refrigerator models manufactured by KitchenAid and sold by most major appliance retailers. Although the series introduced a new, quieter standard for KitchenAid, none of the models were completely silent. It’s normal to hear certain noises intermittently from your Superba refrigerator; however, if those noises become continuous, you may need service.
  1. Noise Is Normal

    • It’s normal for your KitchenAid Superba refrigerator to make noise as it functions. In previous models, the motor was louder than it is in current models. So you may have heard a continuous buzzing or humming noise; in addition, there are six noises you may hear intermittently from your KitchenAid Superba without any concern.

    Types of Normal Noise

    • You may hear buzzing as the water valve opens to fill in the ice maker and cracking as the ice breaks from the mold to fall into the bin. Popping occurs as the walls inside the unit expand and contract from the temperature. Any pulsating noises are associated with the compressor adjusting in the unit. Rattling can come from the flow of refrigerant in the cooling lines or water in the water line. A running water sound sometimes accompanies the water going through the defrost cycle and dripping into the defrost pan. Sizzling or gurgling can occur when that water hits heat during the defrost cycle.

    If They’re Continuous

    • Remember that these noises are normal as long as they occur intermittently. Any one of these noises occurring continuously may indicate a problem with your unit. Consider keeping a record of when you hear the noises and how long they last so you can have a clear picture of what’s going on with your KitchenAid Superba. If you notice an increase in a certain noise, especially in connection with some sort of malfunction, call for service.

    Service

    • The KitchenAid customer service line (1-800-433-1230) can help you troubleshoot any problems over the phone. It can also direct you to certified KitchenAid repair technicians who can diagnose and repair your unit’s problems. Remember that allowing anyone other than a certified KitchenAid repair technician to repair your unit can void the limited manufacturer’s warranty as well as any extended warranty you may have bought through the retailer.
