How to Repaint a Fridge

Interior design trends change often, leaving you with appliances that look out-of-date, but still run great. Instead of tossing your old refrigerator out for the latest style, update it by painting it. Not only does this change the look of your refrigerator, but it can cover up rust, stains or anything else that you may want to hide. Unlike other kitchen appliances, such as microwaves or stoves, a refrigerator can be painted with regular paint, rather than high-heat paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the refrigerator outside or completely cover the floor, walls and counters around the refrigerator in plastic or paper to protect them. If you're painting indoors, open a window or door in the room to provide ventilation.

    • 2

Use a metal spackle knife or wire brush to scrub off any rust flakes from the surface of the refrigerator. Clean the refrigerator completely using a heavy-duty cleaning solvent, according to the manufacturer's directions. Wipe completely using a moist towel. Allow the refrigerator to dry completely.

    • 3

Apply a rust-preventative to any areas where rust was present. If the rust has discolored the metal, paint it with a rust primer. Allow the primer and rust-preventative to dry completely.

    • 4

Tape areas that you don't want covered in paint, using painter’s tape. Secure the tape by running the spackle knife over the tape. This creates a tight seal that prevents the paint from seeping under the tape.

    • 5

Prime the refrigerator with a paint primer, using either spray primer or by rolling on primer. This is particularly important if you plan on painting your refrigerator a lighter color than its current color.

    • 6

Paint the refrigerator using spray paint or by rolling on paint. Use a paintbrush to get small areas and corners. Allow the paint to dry completely. Apply additional coats as necessary.
